Piper Alderman appoints senior Infrastructure and Projects partner

Piper Alderman has announced the appointment of industry recognised Robert Riddell as a partner in its national Infrastructure and Projects team based in Sydney. Robert is joining Piper Alderman from Dentons (previously Gadens), with Special Counsel, Daniel Fitzpatrick.

Robert is a highly respected infrastructure and construction lawyer transacting both nationally as well as internationally. He has built his practice in construction, infrastructure and property in Australia as well as Papua New Guinea (PNG), where he previously held the position of Managing Partner of Gadens’ PNG office.

With over 30 years’ experience, Robert provides legal services for developers, builders and owners of retail shopping centres, aged care, industrial and residential developments. Robert has also developed an international infrastructure practice advising on both soft and hard infrastructure projects, including ports, power, education, telecommunications, mining and agribusiness.

Robert’s practice involves tendering, negotiating and documenting EPCs, EPCMs, design and construct and other service procurement and consultancy agreements. His work also involves drafting and negotiating MOUs, HoAs, consortium deeds, project agreements, shareholder or JV agreements and business asset sale agreements.

Commenting on his decision to join Piper Alderman, Robert said “This is only my second move in 30 years of practice and I am very excited about the next chapter in my career. In my view it is the clients’ interests that come first so it was imperative that the depth and breadth of both my Australian and international practice would be well supported in the move. I am confident Piper Alderman’s extensive construction expertise and reputation for providing exceptional service will do just that. It is most reassuring that my clients have been so supportive and like me they see this refresh as being very positive”.

Managing Partner Tony Britten-Jones said of the appointment “It’s an exciting time in the construction and infrastructure sector as it continues to grow at a rapid pace. The appointment of Robert and Daniel will certainly ensure that our national team is positioned to capitalise on opportunities over coming months and years.”

Robert brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the firm and is unquestionably a top legal practitioner. I am pleased Piper Alderman continues to attract such outstanding leaders.”

Robert is an accredited Security of Payment adjudicator. In 2005, he was appointed to the Master Builders Association's Legal and Contracts Committee and in 2009. In 2015, Robert was appointed Honorary Patron of the Institute of Building Consultants in New South Wales.

Robert has been recognised as a leading construction lawyer in the 2017 Legal500 where he was described as ‘outstanding’ and someone who ‘thinks very commercially’.
